One of Denmark's most important art museums, ARKEN - Museum of Modern Art, is beautifully located on the beach in Ishøj just 17 kilometres from the city center of Copenhagen. ARKEN exhibits modern art from 1990 and onwards. New, important pieces are added to the collection all the time. Work from Damien Hirst, one of our time's great artists' are exhibited in the lobby. ARKEN offers a wide variety of pieces and is certainly worth more than one visit!
The museum itself is a spectacular piece of architecture, inspired by water, ships and the natural surroundings on the beach. The museum Café is attached to the upper level of the museum as if it was a lifeboat hanging on a big ship - the museum itself. From the café you can enjoy a cup of coffee with a great view of the surrounding sand hills, land art and the water. Inside the museum the floor resembles a ship's deck.
Take the s-train, lines A or E, from Copenhagen and change at Ishøj Station to bus number 128 towards ARKEN Museum of Modern Art. You can also walk to the museum, which is located close to the train station. Follow the signs from the train station and experience the diverse architecture in Ishøj. Notice the grey apartment blocks made of concrete. They are the physical manifestation of the idea of good housing in the middle of the 19th centuries. Later you will pass an area of family houses and finally end up walking in beautiful natural surroundings before reaching the museum.
